A poor-quality cutter that crushes cable, or a screwdriver that slips in a terminal, can turn a simple training task into wasted time or an unsafe connection. The best tools for apprentice electricians are not necessarily the most expensive set on the shelf. For apprentices in Japan, they are reliable, correctly rated tools that suit common Japanese wiring methods, fit comfortably in your hand, and help you produce neat work repeatedly.
Start with a modest, professional kit and add specialised items as your school, employer, and type of work require them. This approach saves money, avoids a heavy tool bag full of rarely used items, and helps you learn what each tool is actually for.
Build your core apprentice electrician tool kit
The Japanese word for hand tools is 工具 (kōgu). On domestic wiring jobs, you will use a relatively small group of kōgu every day: screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, stripping tools, a knife, a tape measure, and a tester. Buy these first, choosing reputable trade-grade products rather than very cheap general household tools.
Insulated screwdrivers and terminal drivers
A good screwdriver set is the foundation of your kit. Japanese electrical work commonly uses both Phillips-head screws and slotted terminal screws, so carry several sizes of each. Look for insulated screwdrivers marked for electrical use and designed with firm, accurately shaped tips. Worn tips damage screw heads and make it difficult to apply the correct torque.
For panel work and terminals, a stubby screwdriver can be useful in tight spaces, but it should not replace standard-length drivers. A magnetic tip may make some tasks easier, although it is not suitable for every situation. Keep screwdriver tips clean and replace a damaged driver rather than continuing to use it.
Many sites expect tools marked 絶縁 (zetsuen), meaning insulated. Insulation is an additional safeguard, not permission to work on live equipment. Isolate the circuit, verify the condition of the circuit, and follow the work procedure set by your supervisor.
Combination pliers, long-nose pliers and cutters
Combination pliers, or ペンチ (penchi), are used for gripping, bending and light cutting. Long-nose pliers, ラジオペンチ (rajio penchi), are particularly useful when positioning conductors inside boxes or reaching terminals. Side cutters, often called ニッパー (nippā), provide a cleaner cut on small conductors, cable ties and similar materials.
Do not use one tool for every task. Cutting hardened material with ordinary side cutters can nick the jaws, while using pliers to twist or cut cable beyond their capacity strains your hands and produces poor work. Choose handles that feel secure with gloves on, because gloves are commonly worn during site work.
A dedicated wire stripper
A wire stripper is one of the best early purchases an apprentice can make. For PVC-insulated conductors, it removes insulation consistently without cutting into the copper. This matters for safety and for the practical skills test of the Second Class Electrician qualification, 第二種電気工事士 (Dainishu Denki Kōjishi).
An adjustable automatic stripper is fast, but it is not always the best choice in confined boxes or on every cable type. A manual stripper with clearly marked conductor sizes gives more control and teaches you to judge the correct stripping length. Whichever type you use, inspect the copper after stripping. If strands are cut or solid wire is deeply scored, cut the end off and start again.
Electrician’s knife and cable cutter
A folding electrician’s knife, 電工ナイフ (denkō naifu), is useful for carefully removing an outer sheath and trimming insulation. It requires practice. Never pull a blade towards your body, and avoid deeply scoring a sheath where hidden conductors may be damaged.
For larger cables, use a proper cable cutter rather than side cutters. The result is cleaner, requires less force, and reduces the chance of deforming the conductor. Your employer may provide these larger tools, especially for cable installation work, so check before buying one yourself.
Measuring and testing tools worth buying early
Electrical work depends on verification, not assumptions. A tester is therefore more valuable than many convenience tools.
Digital multimeter
A digital multimeter, テスター (tesutā), should measure AC voltage, resistance and continuity at a minimum. Choose a meter with an appropriate safety category rating for the type of work you expect to perform, protected input terminals, a clear display and leads that are properly shrouded.
Learn the sequence before using it on a circuit: inspect the meter and leads, select the correct function and range, prove the meter on a known source where your procedure requires it, test the circuit, then prove the meter again. A meter set to resistance must never be connected to an energised circuit. This is a basic mistake, but it can destroy the meter and create a hazard.
A non-contact voltage detector can be a helpful secondary indication, particularly when tracing likely live cables. It cannot prove that a conductor is dead. False positives and false negatives are possible, so it must not replace approved isolation and test procedures.
Tape measure, marker and level
Accurate layout is part of electrical workmanship. Carry a durable 5 m tape measure, a fine permanent marker, a carpenter’s pencil and a small torpedo level. These simple tools help when setting outlet boxes, marking conduit runs and checking the alignment of switches and fittings.
In Japan, measurements are normally recorded in millimetres. Become comfortable reading both the standard metric scale and dimensions written on drawings. Clear markings prevent unnecessary rework, especially when several trades are working in the same area.
Tools for Japan’s common wiring systems
The tools you need depend on the work you are learning. Domestic and small commercial installations often involve cable such as VVFケーブル (VVF kēburu), a flat PVC-insulated cable used for fixed wiring, as well as conduit and junction boxes.
For VVF cable, a stripping tool made for flat sheathed cable can speed up preparation and reduce accidental damage to inner insulation. It is useful, but do not buy it before you can safely use a knife and manual stripper. The tool improves consistency; it does not replace judgement.
If you work with conduit, 電線管 (densenkan), you may later need a conduit reamer, pipe cutter, bending tools and fish tape, known as 通線ワイヤー (tsūsen waiyā). These can be expensive and are often shared site equipment. Ask your foreman, 親方 (oyakata), or instructor what is normally supplied. Buying duplicate large tools is a common apprentice expense that brings little benefit.
For the practical examination, prepare only the tools permitted under the current examination rules. A carefully selected exam kit may include pliers, cutters, strippers, screwdrivers, a scale and a cable sheath tool, but permitted tools and task requirements can change. Check the official instructions for your exam year rather than relying on an old checklist.
What not to compromise on
Buy basic accessories gradually, but do not cut corners on the items that protect you or affect connection quality. Prioritise insulated hand tools, a dependable meter, sharp cutting and stripping tools, and suitable personal protective equipment, 保護具 (hogogu).
Your PPE may include safety glasses, gloves, safety footwear and a helmet, depending on the site and task. The exact requirement is set by the workplace risk assessment and company rules. A cheap pair of glasses is better than none for a short task, but it is not a substitute for approved protection that fits properly and is maintained.
Avoid buying large mixed tool sets merely because they appear economical. They often include poor-quality versions of tools you will depend on, plus items you may never use. A small tool bag with named, well-maintained tools is more professional than an overloaded bag. In Japan, label your tools clearly with your name in Japanese or katakana as well as English if needed; shared work areas make mix-ups easy.
A sensible order for buying tools
Begin with screwdrivers, pliers, side cutters, a wire stripper, knife, tape measure, marker and a basic suitable multimeter. Add a VVF stripper when you are regularly preparing that cable. Purchase conduit tools, crimping tools and larger cutters only once your training or employer confirms that you need them.
Keep a simple record of what you buy, including model, purchase date and any test or calibration information. Check cutters for damaged edges, inspect insulation on screwdriver handles and meter leads, and keep tools dry. Good maintenance is part of being dependable on site.
The right kit will develop alongside your skills. Ask experienced electricians why they prefer a particular tool, but do not copy every purchase. Choose tools that help you work safely, measure accurately and make clean connections – then practise until using them becomes calm, controlled and consistent.
