A flat may have ordinary 100V sockets in every room while the air conditioner, induction hob, or water heater is supplied at 200V. This can confuse newcomers, especially when the distribution board appears to receive only one residential supply. The difference between 100V and 200V in Japan is mainly about how the supply conductors are used, how much power a circuit can deliver, and which equipment is designed to use it.
For electricians and trainees, this is not only household knowledge. The 100V/200V arrangement appears in wiring diagrams, distribution-board work, appliance installation, and Second Class Electrician Exam questions. Understanding it properly helps prevent incorrect connections and unsafe assumptions.
The basic difference between 100V and 200V in Japan
Voltage, or 電圧 (den’atsu), is the electrical potential difference between two points. In a typical Japanese home, 100V is supplied between one live conductor and the neutral conductor. A 200V circuit is supplied between two live conductors.
Most homes use a single-phase three-wire system, called 単相3線式 (tansō sansen-shiki). It has two live conductors and one neutral conductor. Each live conductor measures approximately 100V to neutral. However, the two live conductors are at opposite electrical polarities, so the voltage measured between them is 200V.
In simple terms, the same incoming service can provide both voltages:

A 200V domestic circuit is not normally a separate higher-voltage service. It is created by using both live conductors already present in the single-phase three-wire supply.
Why some Japanese appliances use 200V
The main practical benefit of 200V is greater available power at the same current. For a mainly resistive load, power can be estimated with the formula:
Power (W) = Voltage (V) × Current (A)
A 100V circuit carrying 15A can supply about 1,500W. At 200V, a 15A circuit can supply about 3,000W. This makes 200V useful for equipment with substantial heating, cooling, or motor loads.
For example, a larger room air conditioner may be rated for 200V because it can operate with lower current than an equivalent 100V unit of similar capacity. Lower current can reduce voltage drop and conductor heating when the circuit has been correctly designed.
That does not mean 200V is automatically better. A small air conditioner, microwave, or kitchen appliance may be designed for 100V and perform perfectly well on a standard circuit. The correct supply is always the voltage and frequency stated on the appliance rating plate, known in Japanese as the 銘板 (meiban).
Never assume that a larger plug, a dedicated circuit, or a nearby 200V breaker means an appliance can accept 200V. Connecting a 100V appliance to 200V can destroy electronic components, create fire risk, or cause electric shock.
Japan’s 200V is not the same as UK 230V
Foreign residents often make a second mistake: assuming Japanese 200V is close enough to UK or European 230V supplies. It is not necessarily suitable.
Japan’s common domestic voltage is 100V, with 200V available between the two live conductors in a single-phase three-wire system. The UK nominal supply is 230V. Some equipment has a wide input range, such as “100-240V, 50/60Hz”, and can be used with an appropriate plug arrangement. Other equipment is designed specifically for 220-240V and may not operate correctly on Japanese 200V.
Frequency also matters. Eastern Japan generally uses 50Hz, while western Japan generally uses 60Hz. Modern electronic equipment often accepts both frequencies, but motors, pumps, clocks, and some imported appliances may not. Check both the voltage and frequency markings before use.
Wiring and breaker differences
At the distribution board, or 分電盤 (bundenban), a normal 100V branch circuit uses one live conductor and neutral. A 200V single-phase branch circuit uses both live conductors. The neutral is generally not required for a purely 200V load.
Because both live conductors must disconnect together, a 200V circuit normally uses a suitable double-pole breaker arrangement. In Japanese product terminology, you may see 2P2E, meaning two poles and two protected elements. This is different from a breaker arrangement where one conductor is merely switched but not protected.
The circuit breaker is called a 配線用遮断器 (haisen-yō shadanki), often shortened to an MCB in English-language discussions. Where earth-leakage protection is required, the circuit may also be protected by a 漏電遮断器 (rōden shadanki), commonly called an RCD or ELCB depending on the device and context.
Do not choose cable size or breaker rating simply because the circuit is 100V or 200V. The design must consider the appliance load, installation method, conductor size, ambient temperature, grouping, protective device characteristics, and applicable Japanese rules. A 200V circuit can still be overloaded if the equipment demand exceeds its design capacity.
Earth, neutral, and live conductors are not interchangeable
A common source of dangerous errors is treating the earth conductor as a substitute for neutral. It is not. The neutral is part of the normal current path for a 100V load. The protective earth conductor, 接地線 (setsuchi-sen), is intended to help protect people and equipment during a fault.
Many fixed 200V appliances require an earth connection, particularly appliances used in wet areas or those with exposed conductive parts. The exact method depends on the equipment, location, and installation requirements. A proper earth connection does not make an incorrectly wired circuit safe, and it does not remove the need for correct overcurrent and earth-leakage protection.
For existing installations, do not rely on wire colour alone. Older work, alterations, and non-standard repairs can create misleading conditions. Read the circuit labels, inspect the wiring method, and test using approved procedures and suitable instruments. Live testing should only be carried out by competent persons who understand the risks and the test method.
Do not confuse single-phase 200V with three-phase 200V
The term “200V” can describe more than one supply arrangement in Japan. Domestic 200V is commonly single-phase, supplied from two live conductors of a single-phase three-wire system. Commercial premises and workshops may also have three-phase 200V, called 三相200V (sansō nihyaku bōruto).
Three-phase 200V is used for equipment such as larger motors, pumps, machine tools, and commercial air-conditioning systems. Its wiring, load balance, motor control, protective devices, and permitted work scope can differ significantly from a domestic single-phase 200V circuit.
The appliance nameplate and wiring diagram are essential. Look for markings such as 単相 (tansō, single-phase) or 三相 (sansō, three-phase), as well as the number of terminals and the required voltage. Never connect a three-phase motor to a single-phase 200V circuit without an appropriately designed control and conversion system.
Practical checks before working on a 100V or 200V circuit
Before planning an installation or fault-finding task, confirm the supply system rather than working from assumptions. Check the appliance nameplate, circuit schedule, breaker type, cable route, and wiring diagram. Then isolate the circuit using the correct procedure and verify that it is dead with an appropriate tester before touching conductors.
For trainees, it is useful to practise reading Japanese labels at the board. Terms such as 主幹 (shukan, main breaker), 分岐 (bunki, branch circuit), 100V, 200V, 漏電, and 接地 appear regularly on labels and drawings. Being able to recognise them reduces errors when working alongside Japanese electricians.
Electrical work in Japan is regulated, and work that falls within electrical construction must be carried out by a person with the appropriate qualification and authority. The fact that a circuit is “only 100V” does not make it casual DIY work. Both 100V and 200V circuits can cause serious injury, fire, or equipment damage when installed or altered incorrectly.
For exam preparation, remember the core principle: 100V is measured between a live conductor and neutral, while single-phase 200V is measured between the two live conductors. Once that relationship is clear, breaker selection, circuit diagrams, load calculations, and appliance connections become much easier to understand.
The safest habit on any Japanese site is to treat the voltage marking as the start of the investigation, not the answer. Identify the supply system, read the equipment documentation, and confirm the circuit condition before any work begins.
