To pass second class electrician test requirements in Japan, you need more than electrical knowledge: you must read Japanese technical information, recognise materials quickly, and complete safe, accurate wiring within a fixed time.

The qualification is called 第二種電気工事士 (dai-nishu denki kōjishi). It is the standard entry-level national licence for electrical installation work on low-voltage premises, including many homes, shops, and small commercial buildings. For foreign residents, the exam is achievable, but it rewards a structured approach rather than last-minute revision.

Understand the two parts of the exam

The examination normally has a written knowledge stage, 学科試験 (gakka shiken), followed by a practical skills stage, 技能試験 (ginō shiken). You must meet the required standard in the written stage before progressing to the practical stage.

The written paper tests the knowledge behind safe installation work. Expect questions on basic electrical theory, wiring methods, protective devices, materials, relevant laws, drawings, and safety. The wording can be concise and technical, so candidates who understand the Japanese vocabulary have a major advantage.

The practical exam is different. You receive one assigned candidate task, 候補問題 (kōho mondai), from the published set for that examination period. You must build the specified wiring assembly from the supplied materials within the time limit. Marks are lost for serious defects, 欠陥 (kekkan), such as an incorrect connection, exposed conductor, damaged insulation, or the wrong cable length.

Build a study plan that matches the test

A good plan separates understanding from memorisation. Start by studying the written material for several weeks, then introduce practical training early enough that tool handling becomes natural. If your Japanese reading is still developing, allow additional time. Translating every question during a timed paper is tiring and slow.

Begin with the subjects that appear repeatedly:

  • Ohm’s law and basic power calculations: voltage, current, resistance, and power.
  • Series and parallel circuits, including how current and voltage behave in each.

For Japanese terms, make a small revision sheet with the kanji, reading, English meaning, and a photograph or sketch of the item. For example, 配線図 (haisen-zu) means wiring diagram, 接地 (setchi) means earthing, and 絶縁 (zetsuen) means insulation. Past questions are one of the most efficient ways to prepare for the written stage. First, answer a paper without looking at notes. Then review every wrong answer and every answer you guessed correctly. The goal is not merely to recognise the right letter. You should be able to explain why the other options are unsafe, unsuitable, or technically incorrect.

Keep an error notebook. Group mistakes by topic, such as calculations, diagrams, regulations, or materials. Patterns will appear quickly. If you repeatedly miss questions about conductor sizes or protective devices, return to the underlying topic before taking another full paper.

Timed practice matters in the final weeks. However, speed should follow accuracy. A candidate who finishes quickly but misreads a diagram has not gained anything. Read the diagram, identify the switches and terminals, decide the cable routes, and predict which conductors need stripping, joining, or marking. You should understand the circuit operation before cutting a cable.

A reliable practical routine is to inspect, measure, cut, strip, connect, check, and then make a final defect inspection. Use the same order in every practice attempt. It reduces forgotten steps when you are nervous.

Cable preparation is especially important. For VVF cable, make clean sheath cuts without nicking the insulated conductors. Strip each conductor to an appropriate length for its connector or terminal. Too little exposed copper can create a weak connection; too much may leave bare conductor visible outside the terminal.

Practise with the right tools, not shortcuts

Essential items usually include a cable cutter, wire stripper, electrician’s knife, combination pliers, screwdrivers, measuring rule, and ring-sleeve crimping tool. Check that the crimping tool matches the sleeves used in your practice materials.

Tool quality matters, but technique matters more. An expensive stripper will not fix inaccurate measuring or poor conductor identification. Conversely, a safe, correctly used basic tool kit can produce clean work repeatedly.

Set up practice boards under realistic conditions. Give yourself the official time limit or slightly less once you know the tasks. Place materials in a consistent order, because searching for a connector wastes valuable seconds. After each attempt, inspect your work as an examiner would: correct component, correct terminal, correct conductor, clean finish, and no visible damage.

Do not practise only until you complete a circuit once. Practise until you can complete it accurately several times. One successful attempt may be luck. Repeated successful work shows that you have a dependable method.

Know the defects that cause failures

The practical exam does not reward a neat-looking board if a serious fault is present. Treat every connection as if it will be energised, even though the exam assembly itself is not connected to a supply.

Common failure points include incorrect switch wiring, wrong conductor connections, insufficient or excessive stripped length, loose terminal screws, uncrimped ring sleeves, damaged insulation, incorrect use of cable clamps, and a circuit that does not match the drawing. A small cosmetic imperfection may not have the same effect as a defect, but you should never assume it is acceptable.

Build in a final checking stage. Trace each circuit from supply side to load side. Compare the actual assembly against the diagram, not against your memory. Check that coloured conductors are used as required and that every joined conductor is fully secured. This last inspection can prevent an avoidable fail.

Prepare for Japanese instructions and exam-day pressure

You do not need perfect Japanese to succeed, but you do need practical reading confidence. Focus on words used in diagrams, material lists, tool instructions, measurements, and safety notices. Numbers and units also deserve attention: millimetres, square millimetres, volts, amperes, and watts appear constantly.
